Virgin Mobile are a Virtual Mobile Network - that is, they use another company's technical infrastructure to make and receive calls. In Virgin's case, EE (Everything Everywhere - the old Orange and T-Mobile combined) provide the network, whilst Virgin Mobile handle the customer service and billing. The upside is that the network is mature and provides excellent mobile signal.
